Beyond the basics

We've tried to make my.foxmarks.com provide context-sensitive help wherever possible in order to be as user-friendly as possible; to learn more about a feature you see on the page, simply hover your mouse cursor over the appropriate text or button, and a pop-up should show indicating the feature's purpose and use. For any remaining issues, see below.

Errors and Other Problems

Error: Sync Problem: The Bookmark Manager is no longer in sync with the server...

Generally you'll see this error if you're editing or rearranging your bookmarks on my.foxmarks.com at the same time that another of your browsers is attempting an automated update. To work around this you can simply reload the my.foxmarks.com page to refresh the snapshot of your bookmarks.

If the problem frequently persists, you can disable automatic synchronization in your other active browsers by selecting Tools > Foxmarks > Settings... and unselecting "Enable Automatic Synchronization". This will prevent that browser from attempting to update your bookmark collection at the same time that my.foxmarks.com is performing updates. However, it will also prevent automatic synchronization, so you'll have to manually use the "Synchronize Now" button in that same menu for updates to your bookmarks collection in that browser.

Viewing Options

my.foxmarks.com supports two views—"Classic View" and "Grid View"—easily switchable via the two tabs in the lower left corner of the window. Classic View displays the bookmarks as you see them in your web browser's bookmarks organizer, while Grid View simply displays all bookmarks in whatever ranking order you select.

Grid View is not available in Internet Explorer.

Sorting in Grid View

To sort your bookmarks by the various column headings, you need only click on the appropriate column heading on the Grid View page. The selected column should then display an arrow indicating which way the column is sorted; to reverse the order, click the column again.

Adding and Changing Bookmarks

Additions and changes to bookmarks can only be done in Classic View in order to ensure that the item is placed appropriately in your collection. To add a new bookmark, folder, or divider, click on the "New" button located on the left-hand side of the toolbar near the top of the window. Select which type of item you would like to create from the popup menu. A dialog window with a web form will appear where you can enter the details of the new bookmark item. All of your changes are captured "live"; there is no need to tell my.foxmarks.com to save your work. Once you've completed your changes, simply close the sub-window, and you're done.

Changing bookmarks is similar—select the bookmark or folder you'd like to change, then click the "Details" button at the top of the page. This opens a sub-window pre-loaded with the current settings for the entry; once you've edited the bookmark, your changes are saved automatically, so simply close the sub-window when you're done—changes are sent to the server once focus moves off the text field you were changing.

You can also move bookmarks within your collection. Using Classic View, simply drag an item from folder to another. The server will automatically remember where you have moved your bookmarks. There is no need to "save" your work in my.foxmarks.com—all changes made in my.foxmarks.com are automatically captured by the server and synchronized to your other computers the next time they sychronize their bookmarks.

Deleting Bookmarks

You can also delete bookmarks from your collection using my.foxmarks.com. In Classic View, select a bookmark and press the "Delete" button found in the toolbar near the top of the page. If you find a bookmark in Grid View that needs deleting, simply click on it to select it, then click the Classic View tab at the bottom of the page. The bookmark entry will be highlighted in Classic View, at which point it may be deleted.

Please note: Deletions are permanent, so be careful not to delete vital bookmarks!

Why Do Some Items Have an Icon with a Lock?

Some special folders display a "lock" symbol. These items cannot be deleted from my.foxmarks.com. Try deleting them from the bookmarks organizer of your main browser if you really want to delete them. (But in some cases even your own browser will not let you delete them.)

Search Bookmarks

The "Search" button allows you to find your bookmarks using keyword search. Search results will appear in a separate dialog window. Clicking on a search result will cause that item to be selected in my.foxmarks.com. Double-clicking on a search result will open that bookmark item in a new window.

Folders themselves are not returned as search results, but the search tool will consider folder names when searching for keywords.

Why aren't changes made to my browser bookmarks showing up in my.foxmarks.com?

Changes made on my.foxmarks.com will automatically show up and be synchronized with your bookmarks collection the next time each of your computers is synchronized. If you've made changes in your browser that aren't showing up at my.foxmarks.com, you can get the freshest version of your bookmarks from the Foxmarks server by simply reloading the my.foxmarks.com page.
