Foxmarks: Vista IE UAC Support

(Not sure why you're here? Head back to the IE alpha wiki page.)

The Foxmarks Favorites Synchronzier runs as an Internet Explorer extension. When Vista's User Account Control (or UAC, more details here) is enabled, Internet Explorer runs in Protected Mode, which severely limits the Windows functionality available to our extension. While our IE synchronizer still works with Vista's UAC on, the experience is far from ideal. So far from ideal, in fact, we recommend not using our alpha release with a UAC enabled machine at all. However, if you're absolutely dying to get your Foxmarks Favorites on your Windows PC and you're running with Vista's UAC enabled, watch out for the following known limitations.

There are two major restrictions in place that prevent our synchronizer from working correctly. First, we can't access your Favorites' order information. This makes it impossible for us to determine what order your Favorites should be listed in. We can still download your Favorites from our servers and place them all in the correct folders, but we can't attempt to organize the Favorites in each folder. Additionally, any Favorite you add in Internet Explorer will be added to the end of the folder when it's synchronized to our servers. (Note: we have other, unrelated Favorite ordering problems as well. See our known issues page for more information.)

Secondly, we aren't notified when you change your IE Favorites, which means we can't automatically synchronize your changes to our servers. After making changes you'll need to manually start a synchronize to guarantee that your changes are saved to our server. To help ensure that your Favorites remain up-to-date, we recommend that you enable "Sync on shutdown" in the Foxmarks settings, which will synchronize your Favorites every time you close IE.
