Foxmarks: Foxmarks Version 2 Upgrade FAQ

From Foxmarks Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

In December 2007, we released a version 2 upgrade of the Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer that improves functionality and lays the groundwork for a bunch of improvements we'd been wanting to make. Unfortunately, upgrading so many users at once hit our servers hard, so some users saw error messages and very long sync times.

As of the this writing (April 2008), the operational problems that caused us such headaches are now well behind us. The V2 system is now fast and reliable.

Read more about why we upgraded versions, and how it affects version 1 users.

"Not authenticated" error

Foxmarks v2 uses cookies to store your authentication information. If cookies aren't allowed, the Foxmarks will report that it "Could not set cookie" (or "Unknown error 1007").

To accept cookies from "sync.foxmarks.com" and "login.foxmarks.com":

  • In the Firefox menu bar, go to "Tools > Options" (or, under some other operating systems, "Firefox > Preferences", or else "Edit > Preferences").
  • Click on "Privacy"
  • In the "Cookies" section, click on "Exceptions"
  • Add "sync.foxmarks.com" and "login.foxmarks.com" to the Allowed list of cookies.

I installed a computer with Foxmarks v2. I had been using v1 before. I have no bookmarks! How do I get my bookmarks back?

If you had been using Foxmarks v1, and then did a new install with v2, your bookmarks might appear to be gone. If that happened to you, click here for instructions to get your bookmarks back

"Unknown" errors, Corrupt Bookmark Data, or Synchronization Error

If you are getting scary error messages like "Unknown Error 400", "Unknown Error 1006", "Corrupt Bookmark Data", or "Synchronization Error" when you try to sync, then your bookmarks are repairably corrupted. Click here for instructions to fix your bookmarks.

Where is the Foxmarks menu? Why did it move?

In order to conform to Firefox extension standards, we moved the "Foxmarks..." menu item from the Bookmarks menu to the Tools menu.

Note that you can open the "Foxmarks Settings" dialog in several ways:

  • From the menu "Tools > Firefox > Settings..."
  • Right-clicking on the small Foxmarks logo in the bottom-right-hand corner of your browser window
  • The keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-F (or Command-Shift-F on Mac OS X)

Your keyboard shortcuts are interfering with another extension! ARGH!

We're trying to figure out the right way to make this configurable, but for the time being you can "choose" which extension gets the keyboard shortcut by installing it last. Firefox determines the "winner" of such conflicts by whichever extension was installed last, so just uninstall and the install the extension you want to have that keyboard shortcut, and you're all set.

I don't like the status bar icon

We added a Foxmarks status icon to the bottom-right corner of your browser window. If you don't like having this icon, right-click on it to open a popup menu, and uncheck the "Show status icon" option.

If you ever have a change of heart, you can bring it back by going to the Firefox "Tools" menu, and clicking on "Foxmarks > Show status icon."

I'm using my own server and I can't figure out how to make Foxmarks 2 work with it.

We want you to be successful, but we don't officially support people using their own server. If v1 was everything you needed for your own server, feel free to stick with it. There is also a page here on the wiki where users report their experience, tips and tricks for using Foxmarks with your own server.

I'm still having trouble!

If this document does not explain or solve your problem, please write to us at support@foxmarks.com. Be sure to include your username and a description of the problem you're having. Pasting in the last 100 lines of your logfile would also be handy; click here for instructions.
